Emergency Work at Dens Road Dundee
Dens Road Repairs
Complex repairs are required for the areas water main as well as the 700mm diameter brick-built sewer beneath Dens Road
Project Overview
A burst water main occurred on Monday 3rd June with Scottish Water’s field team responding quickly to make the site safe and restore all affected water supplies. Further investigation identified significant damage to the water main and nearby sewer, with repairs now being carried out in close proximity to other significant underground utility infrastructure before the road can be reopened safely.

What happens next?
Our work is nearing completion and we expect it to be complete before the end of November 2024, with Dens Road, between Dura Street and Arthurstone Terrace remaining closed for the duration of this work.
We encountered several technical challenges while carrying out emergency work on Dens Road; the working area was congested with utilities - one of which was a strategic power cable supplying Dundee city centre. A 7-inch water main had to be diverted to allow a Victorian brick-built sewer to be replaced, and more recently we identified a collapse on a culvert which we repaired.
We are now progressing with installing the water main that had to be diverted, which needs to be pressure tested, flushed and sampled prior to the tie-in - this could take up to 10 days to complete.
The complexities were not evident until we excavated the ground, which made it difficult to offer a definitive timescale. Progress was also affected by adverse weather, resulting in some unforeseen delays.
However, we’re now nearing completion of the works and we expect final reinstatement of the road, kerb and footpath to begin around the second week of November, following the installation of the new main.
Our teams are working Monday to Friday, 07:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with some weekend work to expedite the project. Your water supply and drainage services should remain unaffected, and we'll provide 48 hours' notice if an interruption is necessary. While some noise is expected, we'll do our best to minimise any disruption.
We are also continuing to work with Dundee City Council to ensure the traffic management arrangements work as smoothly as possible, with road users and pedestrians urged to plan their journeys and allow some extra time when possible.
